I'm doing CPR/AED training with an EMT service this weekend and they were short on training manuals that they sent home with others taking the class. Does anyone know of where I might be able to download The American Red Cross CPR/AED training manuals or some other equally good training manual? I have searched far and wide but I cannot find any available for free online, they all want me to pay to take a worthless training course. Any help would be great since I don't want to be behind the class. First good response gets a cookie ;)
Your local hospital library or public library usually has them. If not, they can get them through Inter-library Loan. If you want your own copy, try eBay or Amazon. Obtaining one online through download is likely illegal if not from the publisher or licensee. Be careful!

For the American Red Cross Blended learning course for First Aid, Adult CPR/AED
what do they give you after completing and passing the course?
Not sure, but the information is readily available through contacting them on the web
Okay, sounds sketch, but I swear I'm certified. I need to show my cpr card for a personal trainer test and I can't find it. I would reschedule but they are being nazi's about rescheduling. I've been CPR certified for about 5 years and have taken 4 different CPR and first aid classes, and it's a huge bummer to be SoL now. Any advice?
PS online tests don't count, it has to be red cross, american heart, st. john's ambulance, or american health and safety institute.
Nah the only thing you are given is the card, and unfortunately I don't have time to get it replaced.
The course itself is not hard, the 1 day courses I've taken were simple just tedious. The last time I took it was part of a school class at college, and it was more difficult because instead of an 8 hour class one day it became a 4 hour a week class for 10 weeks, and everything got way more in depth.
Seriously, don't do it. Get in touch with the organization that issued the card and ask for a replacement. Forging such things is actually illegal, whether you have the right to have the card or not. The potential risks are much greater than the benefits.
I am taking the course Jan.20.2009. I am 15 years old, decently strong, with good swimming abilities. I am not the best test taker, is the exam easy? As long as I look over the notes will I pass? Is the training/CPR and AED hard to master?
The AED test was prettty easy. its straight foward. just read the book and you should do fine. and yea you need to score over an 80.
Or do I need to take both of these classes plus more? because i want to be over qualified any where I go to be a lifeguard.
(Here are some training classes below, should I take both? if yes, what others should I take too)
ARC Lifeguard Training
American Red Cross lifeguard training provides the skills, knowledge and professional development necessary to keep aquatic facility users safe in and around the water. Those completing the course will be certified. CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid/AED and administering emergency oxygen are included in the training.
YMCA Lifeguard Training
This course is designed to provide the participants with the knowledge and skills needed to be a lifeguard. The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to guard by anticipating and preventing problems before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger when necessary. It will include: accident prevention, guarding techniques, pool management and even more safety skill
There are four major certifications for lifeguarding:
American Red Cross: Offers Lifeguarding, Waterfront and Waterpark certifications. There is also a Lifeguard Management course. This certification is the most common.
YMCA Lifeguard: Not all YMCAs require the YMCA cert, but the certification is only good at YMCAs
Ellis: Not very common.
StarGuard: The least common, I've only known one person certified in it. She was in my Red Cross class because her new job didn't recognize it.
Here's what I would recommend. Contact the place you want to work and see what they require and take that course. It would be a HUGE waste of time and money to be certified in something thats not required. Having extra certifications that are not required does not make you a better job candidate.
When I am hiring guards, it can actually be a deterrent if they have more than one certification, and heres why. In an emergency, my staff needs to work as a team. They all have specific roles and responsibilities, which is based on their training. If a guard has more than one certification, which way are they going to do something? For example: What if they start to backboard someone the YMCA way, when all the other guards are Red Cross? More certs can make for more confusion.
