Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting the emergency disaster-caused needs of individuals and families. When a disaster threatens or strikes, we provide shelter, food, and health and mental health services, which address basic human needs. In addition, we help individuals and families to resume their normal daily activities independently. This may include a referral or a way to pay for what is needed most: groceries, new clothes, rent, emergency home repairs, transportation, household items, medicines, and occupational tools.

The Red Cross may also help those needing long-term recovery assistance when all other available resources, including insurance, government, private, and community assistance, are either unavailable or inadequate to meet the needs. All assistance is based on verified disaster-caused needs and all assistance is free-literally a gift as a result of the generous support of the American people.

The Red Cross also feeds disaster victims and emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned immediate family members outside the disaster-affected area, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and links disaster victims to other available resources.

we want to donate money for China earthquake via redcross, but we still have some questions:
1.Is there a specified dept. in canada redcross for earthquake?Or we can only donate to redcross, and they give out to different dept.?eg. Myanmar, malaria nets.
2.How many percent will they give to China from our donation?
3.Can we join the match program hold by Canada goverment for China earthquake?

We 're very appreciate for the answers!

Red Cross is divided into separate organizations for each nation. With large, high-profile disasters such as the earthquake, they set up independent funds so that you can donate directly and make sure your money goes where you intended it. As far as percentage donated going to administrative costs and the likes, Red Cross is better than many charities but still a decent chunk goes to 'not directly' to the victims. You can find everything you need about donating to the Canadian Red Cross earthquake fund here:
http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=27 348&tid=001

As for the match program, that's not through the Red Cross. It goes directly through the Canadian government. They don't have a handy online donation form, so you'll have to make a call, but there's a web page with all the information about it here:
http://www.acdi-cida.gc.ca/CIDAWEB/acdic ida.nsf/En/NAT-51614315-P74

My guess is that with the matching Canadian donation, more of the money would surely go to help victims if you donated to the Canadian fund rather than to the Red Cross.
