I am here in Germany, my family is in PA. If I get a Red Cross message that requires me to come home that someone is gravely ill or some sort of terrible accident, does the Red Cross check to see if it is a legitimate claim? And, do they still issue emergency passports? My son was born here a month ago and doesnt have a passport yet. Of course I can't leave my children (my daughter has hers) behind (their father is in the Army and thinks only of himself and doesnt take care of our children). And, since my mother's mom is not doing so well, would we all (me, my mom, my son, and daughter) be able to go home to be with her in her last moments? Of course my husband is preparing to deploy so he cant go anywhere. And, would it be a MAC flight? I have a friend stationed at a military base who would be able to pick me up from a MAC flight and take me to PA.Please help with as much info as possible! Thanks
My mother is a dependent, and it was NOT a long drawn out difficult, etc. process. I didn't say that my hub is the father of my son, he's in the role. If my grandmother raised me, she would be considered for emergency leave; I am an army wife, not in the military! And Like I said, leaving ANY of my children behind is NOT an option. I probably will just wait til I get the passport then just go home.
Have your family doctor in PA contact the Red Cross and request your presents. It has to come from a doctor not your family. That is how it is verified.
I am not sure about emergency passports, but you should be able to make an appointment with your husbands military personnel office and explain the situation. You can probably get the information over the phone. Any paperwork will require your husbands signature, but if I am not mistaken you can initiate the paperwork or at lest find out what needs to happen.
Last, as part of the deployment process, these administrative issues can be addressed and paperwork initiated. It will be harder to get done once he is deployed, but it is not impossible.
Get you family doctor to contact the Red Cross and visit your local Military Personnel Office as soon as possible.
Good Luck
My husband and I are expecting a baby in Jan. and it is a high risk pregnancy we already were told from History. If it turns out to be an emergency has anyone ever had to call Red Cross to have a Soldier home fast? If so how hard was it to do and how quick was it?
If your husband is out at sea or in Iraq, the red cross will have to locate and contact your husband's command first, and than his command will fly him back asap, due to some circumstances it might be delay, but none the less they will do the best to get him home asap.
I had to miss a class here and there due to brain injuries that cause headaches from active duty service, if I told everyone it may happen prior to starting each session? that is my main reason for not teaching so far, I don't wish to let people down if I take on the challenge. any suggestions?
I have volunteered and worked with the Red Cross myself, so I can assure you that they are always happy to have whatever help they can get. However, if you schedule yourself to teach classes, you need to make sure that you can be there or have a plan for someone to fill in for you. A lot of folks travel some distance for Red Cross training, so you need to think of them and their plans.

The #1 Item to Store for an Emergency | The Daily Middle
When it comes to prioritizing your emergency supplies, what is the number one item that you should store?
Hopefully your response is WATER. When it comes to responding to a disaster or an emergency situation securing a safe source of water should be your top priority. The best method to accomplish this is to already have stored water on hand.
With few exceptions the average human body cannot survive without water for more than 3-4 days. While food and other supplies are necessary and important you simply won’t last long without a good source of drinking water.
Depending on the circumstances of the emergency you’ll either need to “Grab-n-Go” or “Shelter-in-Place”. For your convenience I’ve listed your best options for each situation.
Grab-n-Go
For “Grab-n-Go”, you basically have three options: Water Bottles, Water Pouches and Water Boxes. A water bottle is something you can pick up from a local grocery store. The draw back is that they’re not packaged and designed for long term storage. Water Pouches are a great option because they’re specifically packaged for long term storage (5 years). Datrex Water Pouches contain 4.227 ounces which is the exact amount the Red Cross recommends per meal in an emergency situation. The advantage to this is that you don’t have to worry about saving an opened pouch of water.
