Is there a minimum magnification level you need to start a fire? I don't want glass because it might break.
I already have 2 other fire starting tools: A "Strike Force" http://www.survivaltopics.com/survival/s trike-force-fire-starter/ and a regular Bic lighter.
I figure the more options I give myself, the better.
I carry a fresnel lens - the flat, flexible sheet that is carved up to magnify. These are virtually indestructible and available all over the place. Office supply stores carry various sizes as baby boomers get older and their eyes start to go.
I carry one in my wallet, very similar to the one in the link below. These also were the lens on the "night owl" magnifier and led light that was hawked on tv a few years back. I have one in stuck in the visor of my car for reading maps at night.
I also strongly endorse the silva compass answer above. A silva compass is a great piece of gear and well worth carrying - very durable. I'm in my 50's and still use the one I carried as a kid
a great jump start to creating your own kit
My friend is grounded for...several months, and I want to make him a cute/funny survival kit. I'm thinking a pocket knife (for carving out the days), a marble (for when he loses his), a photo of somewhere tropical, quarters for a pay phone, a crayon (to brighten the days), etc. Any other ideas?
i wouldnt put the knife in there. maybe like a fun book, or a puzzle. i know that sounds lame but thats what happens when you get grounded.
something like a rubiks cube or something that will take him a very long time to finish. or you can just buy him 3 hackeysacks and let him teach himself how to juggle.

My daughter's class is putting a shoebox of stuff together, then will raffle it off. Maybe it will inspire others to do the same, given the recent stranded folks. Hoping the Dad is found soon. Anyway, can you think of any other items that may be included or did we cover it? Thanks!

Great ideas everyone! Thanks!!!!
Instead of a flashlight with batteries, one of those shake-up flashlights would be better since batteries tend to run out faster when it's cold.
What would you put into your survival kit? Or if you were a bridesmaid, what would you expect to find in it? I bought cute little pocket books for my girls...and I'm making them into little survival/emergency kits. Thought it would be a cute idea.
I have a little bit of an idea of what to put in them, went shopping at the dollar store yesterday and picked up some stuff: toothbrush, hairbrush, lip gloss, advil, mini manicure kit, mini sewing kit, some mints and some gum.
Can you think of anything else I can put in them? Am I missing anything?
Thanks for your help in advance!!

I had the most insanely anal retentive OCD emergency kit ever. Trust me, you will NOT need all of this, but to me it was cheap insurance.

One of the neatest things I had, which I used because my curls needed retouching, was a cordless curling iron. http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.a sp?pid=77381&catid=80575&trx=PLS T-0-SEARCH&trxp1=80575&trxp2=773 81&trxp3=1&trxp4=0&btrx=BUY- PLST-0-SEARCH

I bought myself one of these and was pleasantly surprised for the first time since I started buying and looking at these sorts of kits. I had just decided I was going to give up and simply build my own and I found this one…
It has what you need for starting a fire, or two. It has signaling items for rescue. There are items for finding and procuring the food you will need to keep yourself alive while you wait for resource. There is even a little compass and some minor first aid items plus the package fits into a shirt or back jean’s pocket. This makes it far more likely to be the kit you’ll have with you when your hunting, camping or hiking trip takes a turn for the unexpected.
